Eli Lilly and Co. and its partner, GlaxoSmithKline, are warning consumers not to take Nexium for heartburn, stomach cramps, pain or menstrual cramps.
“Nexium, also known as esomeprazole magnesium, is a commonly prescribed antacids, anti-inflammatory drugs and pain reliever for millions of people worldwide. But in some cases, people taking Nexium are taking it for heartburn, stomach cramps, pain or menstrual pain. The FDA has recommended that consumers take a single dose of 20 milligrams of esomeprazole in 24 hours for up to four weeks. If you are taking this medication for heartburn or stomach cramps, then a 20 milligram dose should be taken for four weeks, and then a 20 milligram dose is taken for three days. The medication should not be taken for more than three days at a time.”
The warning is based on a study of the drug’s effectiveness against the bacteria Helicobacter pylori, and not its potential side effects.
“We do not recommend taking Nexium for heartburn, stomach cramps or pain or menstrual cramps. It is not recommended for those who have not had heartburn or stomach cramps before.”
The warning was first published in theNew England Journal of Medicinein June 2024.
“We advise patients not to take Nexium for heartburn, stomach cramps or menstrual pain or for other reasons. This is not a suitable treatment for people who have a history of stomach or kidney issues, ulcers, or acid reflux, which could be a sign of an underlying condition,” the study authors wrote in the journal.
“For some patients, taking Nexium for heartburn, stomach cramps or menstrual pain can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure, and this may lead to serious health complications. The drug should not be taken for longer than three days at a time,” the authors added.
“In rare cases, people taking Nexium for heartburn, stomach cramps or menstrual pain may develop an allergic reaction. These reactions may include a rash, itching, swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe dizziness or weakness, chest pain or pressure in the back, arms or legs, swelling in the hands or feet, shortness of breath, or difficulty walking. The drug should not be taken for longer than three days at a time.”
The FDA has previously warned that the use of Nexium for heartburn, stomach cramps or menstrual pain, and also for other uses, is associated with increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
“This is not a new issue, and we have seen a growing body of research to support the use of Nexium for these indications. We will continue to monitor the potential risks and discuss the safety and efficacy of this medication in patients and their care team for further research,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb. “In addition to our ongoing work in monitoring this medication, we are reviewing the safety and efficacy of Nexium in patients with specific medical conditions, including liver or kidney disease, heart conditions or who have used Nexium for more than a decade.”

Nexium control Gastro-Resistant Tablets
Nexium control contains the active ingredient esomeprazole. Nexium control is used to treat conditions such as migraine, arthritis, epilepsy, and sleep apnoea. Just one pill a day is used to treat a condition called post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD). Nexium control may also be used to treat stomach ulcers, bleeding problems, and kidney problems caused by medications. These conditions may occur 12 months and above. Take Nexium control for 3 months and then annually thereafter. If you have bleeding or blood in your stomach, take a dose a day until the blood has dried. Do not take more than directed (every 4 hours) unless directed by your doctor. Take as directed by the doctor. Do not take more than once every 24 hours. You should not use more than once in a 24-hour period. Nexium control may also be used to treat stomach bleeding, ulcers caused by medications, or a infection.
